Road Trip NYSAs another school year winds down, many people are looking forward to enjoying the “perfect family vacation”. Perhaps it’s camping in the Adirondack Mountains, hiking the Gorge Trail at Letchworth or a relaxing week at Alleghany State Park. We’re not talking about the notorious Griswold family getaways, but a stress-free road trip. Does such a thing really exist? It can – with the proper planning and mindset.

Here are some helpful tips to prepare your vehicle for an enjoyable summer road trip.

Top off your fluid levels

Make sure your vehicle is properly filled with power steering fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid, antifreeze/coolant, windshield washer, oil and needless to say, gas.

Check the condition of your tires and brakes

Do you have sufficient tread depth on your tires? Tires can get extremely hot during summer driving conditions. This can lead to tire blow-outs if the tires are considerably worn. In addition to a visual inspection, ensure your tires are properly balanced, rotated and aligned. Check the air pressure on all tires including the spare. Keep a tire gauge in your glove box to check your tire pressure throughout your trip (always check when the tires are cold). Are your brakes working properly? If there are any unusual vibrations or noises when applying the brakes, have them inspected prior to your trip. These simple steps can help improve gas mileage and keep you moving in the right direction on your journey.

Pack light and properly secure your items

Whether you’re hauling a camper, have an overhead rooftop cargo carrier, have a bike rack attached or bringing kayaks and sporting equipment – you’ll want to double-check that everything is properly secured. Nothing is more stressful (or dangerous) than seeing an item come dislodged in your rearview mirror. Furthermore, overloading your vehicle is less economical and causes your tires to wear faster; this can make them more susceptible to flats and blowouts. Try to only pack what you really need.

How are your wiper blades?

There’s nothing worse than getting caught in a heavy downpour and your wiper blades are barely touching the windshield. It’s suggested that you replace your wiper blades about every 6 months. In fact you may also want to apply a rain repellant to help any water bead up and clear from your windshield and windows quickly.

Is your air conditioning working properly?

Does your vehicle cool down as it should? If not, try recharging your coolant or have it inspected. A hot car stuck in traffic is not fun for anyone.

Prepare a roadside emergency kit

It’s a good idea to pack a roadside emergency kit containing a blanket, a flashlight with fresh batteries, and some extra food and water for an emergency.

Take advantage of technology

The Global Positioning System (GPS) and various mobile applications can help streamline the planning and execution of your road trip. Whether you are getting directions, checking traffic reports, monitoring road construction, searching for the cheapest gas, finding a quality burger, checking reviews of activities or storing coupons and other documents for your trip – chances are there is a mobile app that can help you.

There is an abundance of outdoor activities right here in upstate New York. While these are nearby destinations, some families are adventuring out even further this summer. Start your road trip off on the right foot and prepare your vehicle for the trek. You’ll save yourself time, aggravation and money in the long haul. Be safe in your travels and have fun!
